General information

Our Section conducts continuing education courses for physicians with a federal medical diploma or a federally recognized foreign medical diploma for sonography of the musculoskeletal system.

The Section no longer conducts basic, advanced and final courses for sonography of the infant hip itself, but collaborates with the Swiss Association for Ultrasound in Pediatric Practice (SVUPP) and recommends its courses.

Organization of training and continuing education

The umbrella organization SGUM is responsible for the administration and control of all SGUM certificates of competence.

The sections, in our case the Musculoskeletal Section, are responsible for continuing education/training until the certificate of competence is obtained (passed exam).

After obtaining the certificate of competence, you can become a member of our section and thus help shape the life of the association. After passing the exam, you can apply for membership here:

First steps:

1. Open an account with the umbrella organization: https://sgum-ssum.ch/my_sgum/

  • All data is managed centrally there, and this is your point of contact after receiving the SGUM Sonography Module Musculoskeletal System (FA MSK) certificate of proficiency.
  • In particular, continuing education after receiving the FA BWA, recertification, and the awarding of credits are organized there.

2. Open an account here on our section website: www.msus-schweiz.ch

  • All training and education to the FA MSK is organized here.
  • After passing the exam or receiving the certificate of proficiency, you have the opportunity to become a member of our section: here.
  • After receiving the certificate of proficiency, you have a continuing education obligation, which is monitored by the umbrella organization (see above).

Definition of terms for theoretical and practical training:

Hospitation: The trainee is present at the ultrasound examinations of a tutor in the practice/clinic for the purpose of deepening his own knowledge and skills, as well as to see more pathological findings. The trainee is allowed to transcribe at least the main pathological findings in each case. Hospitations are not credited for the continuing education certificate of proficiency in sonography BWA. Only supervisions are allowed.

Supervision: The tutor is present during the entire examination or performs the ultrasound examination again in full afterwards and in the presence of the trainee "=direct supervision".

Further training is carried out in accordance with the "musculoskeletal system module" certificate of competence, whereby "controlled" in the musculoskeletal system section is to be understood as supervision.

Supervisions as defined above are entered directly in the database www.msus-schweiz.ch by the tutor/supervisor after they have been carried out.

Only supervisions by a recognized tutor or supervisor SGUM FA Sonography Module BWA are recognized.

Self-reported examinations: The trainee performs a complete examination on a patient without a tutor or supervisor at his/her side and documents the findings - diagnosis (including image documentation) in a definitive written report. Learning objective: independent autonomous formulation of a sonographic finding and diagnosis. 200 independent examinations must be carried out after the final course and then presented to a tutor; the tutor then enters these in the msus-schwei.ch database as whole.

Tutors: if you do not yet have a tutor or supervisor to carry out the supervisions with you, you must contact a colleague:

"Search" on the top right: e.g. place of residence or also leave blank for "all" then filter for "All Visors".

Number of supervisions:

1 supervision = 1 complete examination of a region with report and picture documentation

1 independent examination = 1 complete examination of a region with report and image documentation

Examples: Shoulder region left = 1 supervision; shoulder region bds = 2 supervisions.

Ultrasound regions include:

  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Hand
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Foot

Skill certificate sonography (SGUM), module musculoskeletal system:

Attendance of the courses of the musculoskeletal section SGUM according to the criteria listed below.

Prior to this, it is generally recommended to deepen the anatomical knowledge and to deal with the sonographic possibilities of the musculoskeletal system.

Courses:

Basic course (basic): Duration 18 hours (basics and normal findings)Advanced course (intermediate): Duration 18 hours (basics of pathological findings)Final course (advanced): Duration 12 hours (repetitions and outlooks, deepening of pathological findings, administrative matters).

Total: 48 hours

The exact content of the individual courses depends on the learning objectives (see course documents).

Hand surgeons have separate guidelines focused on their needs.

Final Exam:

Upon completion of the final course and completion of the 200 independent examinations, a final examination is given. It can be taken at the earliest two years after the basic course and not at the same time as the final course.

Specific course of training for the sonography module of the musculoskeletal system:

The courses of the Musculoskeletal Section SGUM are only intended for physicians with a federal medical diploma or a federally recognized foreign medical diploma.

1. basic course

100 (supervision see above) = 100 examinations prior to the advanced course

2. Advanced course

100 (supervision see above) = 100 examinations before the final course

3. Final course

200 self-reported examinations (independent) with balanced distribution (all regions included in the distribution) on the musculoskeletal system must be performed independently and documented (report and image documentation) within 2 years after the last course attendance. Here, hospitations are desirable and to be welcomed.

The documented 200 independent examinations must be checked and confirmed by a tutor (entry in the database).

4. final examination

5. application for the certificate of competence with the certificate of passed examination SGUM umbrella organization

A specialist title is required for the definitive receipt of the certificate of proficiency.

Remarks:

Supervision prior to the basic course will not be credited.
Holders of the Swiss Certificate of Competence SGUM Sonography other module (e.g. abdomen) must perform 50% of the required supervisions and examinations on their own responsibility.

Application for reduced number of supervisions and examinations here.

  • The number of participants in the courses is generally limited in order to be able to teach the practical exercises on the equipment efficiently. Registrations are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, based on established quotas.
  • The Musculoskeletal Section of the SGUM reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient participants. In this case, any payments already made by participants will be refunded. No claims for further compensation can be made against the Section.
  • Coffee breaks and lunches are usually taken together on the individual course days and are included in the course costs. All other expenses such as travel, accommodation, other meals and teaching materials are the responsibility of the participant.
