Guidelines for obtaining the qualification certificate in sonography of the musculoskeletal system (SGUM) for hand surgeons.

The basic course in sonography of the musculoskeletal system is the building block for ultrasound training. Until the advanced course, 100 supervised sonographies, which are cleanly documented with findings (image documentation and report), must be entered by the tutor/supervisor. As a hand surgeon it is possible to go through the curriculum of the sonography training hand specific. In this case, supervision is only allowed by a hand tutor recognized by the SGUM (please refer to the SGUM tutor list). Each participant is responsible for the number of his sonographies and the cooperation with his tutor.Precise ultrasound knowledge of hand anatomy is a prerequisite for the advanced course. Therefore, an anatomy exam is given as part of the advanced course for hand surgery candidates. The exam is based on the Sonoanatomy Hand learning objectives.

After passing the exam and completing the advanced course, another 100 supervised sonographies as mentioned above must be performed.

A pathology exam will be given as part of the final course. The exam is based on the Sonopathology Learning Objectives for Hand Surgeons. Those who have not achieved the specified scores on the anatomy exam in the previous advanced course will additionally repeat the anatomy exam.

Once the final course has been reached, 200 more cleanly documented sonographies (image documentation and report) are required and also checked by tutor and entered into the database until registration for the final exam can be made. Only after successfully passing the final examination can the certificate of proficiency be applied for.
